Deutsche Schule Corvallis
Welcome message from the Director Corvallis, April 2024
Dear friends and visitors,
On behalf of the entire German school community, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our school! Our non-profit language immersion program “Deutsche Schule Corvallis” is an educational program focusing on introducing German language and culture to the children, youth, and adults in our area.
In 2012, we became an independent, small non-profit organization with weekly programs and cultural activities for children. With the help of our community, we were able to grow, offer an increasing number of classes and conversation opportunities to a diverse group of learners, offer summer camps and cultural events such as a Holiday festivities, concerts, and art exhibits.
Since 2018, we have been located in the Education wing of the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan (on 35th and Harrison) in Corvallis, allowing us to offer all classes in one place. In particular, we currently offer group and individual classes for ages 4 to 14+, adult classes of A1 to B2 levels, summer camps, no-school day camps, art classes, board game nights, and more. Our enrollment is now at about 50 students. The COVID pandemic presented unique challenges to our school, but it allowed us to strengthen and expand our online program that we now offer along with in-person classes. We also have a library with over 800 books and 200 DVD that provides reading and listening opportunities for children and adults.
2022 marked the 10-year anniversary of our school that we celebrated with additional cultural events. Thanks to many volunteers, we brought to life a Holiday Market in December of that year, and we made 200 wreaths for our yearly fundraiser. Both activities continue to be a German School tradition during the Holiday season.
Our goal for the coming years is to sustain our current program offerings and add even more opportunities for the community to learn about German culture, music and language: open new classes, bring German cultural events to area schools, make small scholarships available to children and youth, organize cultural events in our area (such as puppet masters, singers, films, festivals and market stands), and support the growth of the school by inviting additional faculty with a strong educational background to join our mission.
Learning foreign languages and cultures has an important role in an increasingly connected world. It not only enables us to appreciate differences in others, but also to better understand ourselves. Please take a look at our website or Facebook page to explore our calendar and all the activities and events we have to offer. Please also come visit us in person or via Zoom in our classes, learning activities and events. Become a stable part of our community.
Sincerely,
Ludmila Schuster & the DSC Team
